The case for an increase in British rates is not as ironclad as it once was. He has been in and out of hospital with cardiac problems ever since.Since returning to power for a third term as Prime Minister in 1993, he has looked so frail that many politicians and political observers, including those inside his own Pasok party, suspect he is no longer able to cope with his workload.His refusal to discuss his future, either before or after the next general elections due in 1997, and his increasing reliance on his young wife Mimi, who heads his private office, have provoked a serious split within Pasok and the formation of an internal opposition movement that has been increasingly vocal in its criticisms.His government has suffered from a flurry of resignations and reshuffles in the past few months.Mrs Papandreou was by her husband’s side as he was driven off to hospital yesterday morning, just as she has followed him every step of the way since bursting into the limelight as his mistress during the 1989 general election campaign.Mr Papandreou has always maintained that she saved his life and gave him the strength to keep going, but the Pasok dissidents have accused her of abusing her position to filter access to the Prime Minister, foster a private clique of court favourites, and cultivate her own political ambitions.The announcement three months ago that she intended to run for parliament provoked a violent backlash, including the publication in tabloid newspapers of old photos of her sunbathing naked.. With Mr Kwasniewski’s triumph in the presidential election, the party has come almost full circle.To critics who accuse him of being a Moscow-leaning Communist stooge, he says that, contrary to predictions, the SLD-led government has not reversed economic reform nor backtracked on Poland’s attempt to join Nato and the European Union Nor will he as president, he promises.. Under his leadership, he and the party have never looked back.In 1993, on a ticket of softening the hardships of economic transformation, the SLD romped to victory in parliamentary elections. He defends his decision to remain in the party after the declaration of martial law in 1981 on grounds that he wanted to help reform it. “These young people, without historical sentiments or prejudices, are our greatest chance and our greatest hope,” said the president-elect.Although he was a member of the Communist Party from 1977 until it dissolved itself in 1990, Mr Kwasniewski says he was too young and junior to have been involved in anything too unsavoury. Many also felt that while he had undoubtedly served a vital purpose in getting rid of Communism, Mr Walesa’s abrasive personality and his performance as president left much to be desired.Mr Kwasniewski, a sports minister in the last Communist government and who now calls himself a social democrat, received strong support from younger voters whose memories of the old regime had clearly faded. But he said the closeness of the contest proved “the Solidarity ideal is still alive in the hearts of millions of Poles”.For Mr Walesa, the election represented a re-run of the Solidarity-Communism conflict.
